You’ve checked your countdown and your vacation is only days away! Excited & thrilled out of your mind, you check the weather at your resort, but to your dismay…
First, never fear because, in Mexico especially, “thunderstorms” could be a little afternoon sprinkle and then back to sunshine for days. However, if this puts a damper on your outdoor plans, we have some ideas for how to make your resort experience just as fun as it would be in the sun.
What to do on a rainy day at your resort:
1. Drink under your beach cabana
Sometimes all you need to do is wait out the rain. Why not do it on your beautiful beach under the shelter of your cabana? You can still enjoy ocean views in the rain.
2. Eat indoors
One of the best aspects of a resort vacation is FOOD. And food happens to taste the same regardless of the weather. Most every resort’s restaurants are either covered or partially covered so you can enjoy watching the beauty of a Mexican or Caribbean sprinkle. Plus you could munch on that guacamole and pico (or whatever appetizer you prefer) all day long.
3. Walk in the rain
Speaking of enjoying the ocean, take a stormy walk in the rain on the beach! It’s so much fun to just embrace whatever the weather holds.
4. Enjoy resort activities
There are always activities on your resort property. However, some resorts create a specific schedule for rainy days. Ask your concierge for the regular schedule and the rainy day schedule.
For example, Secrets Akumual in Riviera Maya:
They offer Spanish, cooking, yoga, dance, cocktail classes, tequila/wine tastings, indoor bars have fun themed nightly events as well as group activities like bingo, and themed dinner nights. One night a BeachMaster was at Secrets Akumal and there was a fire show entertaining guests as they ate dinner around the pool. It was gorgeous.
5. Tour the lobby
It’s so easy to soak in your resort that you sometimes miss one of the most beautiful aspects– the lobby. Resorts take extreme pride in their unique and elaborate lobbies.
6. Soak up the room amenities
This is when it’s worth it to be picky about your room choice. Almost every resort room has a television, refillable mini bar, a shower, and sometimes an indoor Jacuzzi. If you upgrade to the exclusive club rooms, you can enjoy fun on your balcony/terrace with a plunge pool, Jacuzzi, and/or furniture. Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with lounging around in your robe, slippers, and watching Netflix or a movie until the rain passes.
And hello, remember room service? Not every resort is the same, but most offer 24/7 complimentary room service. That’s a plus to keep me entertained for hours.
7. Make friends with the staff
This can be easily overlooked. But we have had so much fun getting to you resort staff. They are so fun & happy, and they’re excited to get to know you. Ask them about their stories, where they’re from, and about their families. They’d love that. And trust us, you would too.
