How to Maintain Health Goals While Traveling

When vacationing at an All Inclusive beach resort, you have to know that you’re going to be bombarded by a wide array of delicious foods and drinks. From the buffet, to the a la cart restaurants, to the swim-up bar, to the room service… carbs, sugar and calories are everywhere.

And if you’re anything like me, you automatically think — well, there goes my physique, my energy and my complexion. But if you’re anything like me, you’d be wrong. With a little bit of work and self control, it’s still possible to savor your resort’s cuisine without compromising your health or fitness goals.

So, enjoy yourself without feeling like trash.

How to Maintain Health Goals While Traveling:
  • It starts with you

Establish good eating habits before you go, so it’ll be easier to commit to healthy eating choices throughout your whole trip.

  • Don’t get “Hangry”

Hangry (adj.) a state of being one gets when so hungry that they become not only ravenous, but angry as well. The ‘hangry” person is also prone to overeating to get out of their hangry state.

To avoid falling victim to this adjective, snack on food that is high in protein and low in sugar. This will help you avoid the sugar crash that leads to hangryville.

This tactic also applies to the travel portion of your trip. Pack snacks from home to avoid sugary (not to mention, pricey) snacks one can purchase in the airport.

  • Eat fresh.

When you have the choice, the closer things are to nature, the better they are for you. Don’t fret; you won’t be foraging for healthy food—there will be options.

For example, resorts like Secrets Capri in Riviera Maya, have health-conscious meal options including gluten free, sugar-free, vegetarian and organic selections. And hotels get it, they know people look for healthy options on their menu so look for little symbols on menu.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana also offers its guests a vacation focused on wellness and serves an array of organic food and beverage selections that are chosen to meet all dietary needs and include locally-grown ingredients.

  • Drink water

Limit the amount of mixed drinks. Those unlimited beverages are loaded with sugar and calories. Limit even the “zero” calorie/diet beverages. Water is best, it’s important to stay hydrated and has many health benefits.

  • “Moderation’ Perimeters in the face of temptation

There will be indulgent main courses and desserts offered to you. If you are a person that has a difficult time saying “no” to temptation, make guidelines and perimeters.

For example: choose one meal a day to splurge. Or make a goal that motivates you to move, “I will only have x serving(s) of dessert today IF I am physically active for x amount of time.” Which brings me to…

  • Grab a map to look for resort amenities

Most resorts have gyms. When you get to the resort, get a map and locate it ASAP. Then, make a plan on when to use it!

Also ask for a list of activities that your resort facilitates. You may find yoga, water aerobics or another group exercise class offered. Aventura Spa Palace (Hard Rock Riviera Maya) has a state-of-the-art fitness center, 14 obstacle fitness trail, 100 ft. climbing wall, spinning, yoga, aerobics, meditation garden, lap pool, indoor sound pool, cross current exercise pool, water sports, tennis, basketball and golf. Go play!

  • Use nature as your gym

Maximize your time in an exotic location by taking a walk, jog, hike or run along the beach.

  • Do a workout in your hotel room

  • Relax

If you get off track from your health goals, tomorrow is a new day. According to health professionals, including WebMD, stress releases adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones make your body hold on to unwanted fat. Cortisol has been linked with the buildup of abdominal fat and also interferes with your metabolic processes. Moral of the story—don’t stress!

If healthy living is part of your lifestyle, you do not have to bend over backward to plan a vacation to meet your needs.

Hopefully, these tips and examples have expanded the possibility of truly tailoring your next vacation to you—without having to make future “alterations”!
