How to Make Jamaican Beef Patties at Home

Earlier this year, I visited Secrets Wild Orchid on the stunning island of Jamaica.

While there, I swam in the ocean, enjoyed a catamaran ride, took a lot of naps on the beach and drank one-too-many Mango Tangos — but one of my favorite things was the authentic Jamaican Beef Patties.

On the daily, a little shop by the pool would cook-up fresh, never-ending patties… mmm my mouth is watering.

To say I ate 10 pounds of the stuff throughout may vacation may be an understatement.

So, when I got home, I was obviously having withdrawals. I immediately craved the crispy, slightly spicy, tender treat — so, I found a recipe!

And guys — it’s so good.

How to Make Jamaican Beef Patties at Home:

For crust:

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1teaspoons curry powder
  • dash salt
  • 1cup butter
  • 1cup shortening
  • 1cup water

For filling:

  • tablespoons butter
  • lb ground beef
  • small onion, finely diced
  • teaspoon curry powder
  • teaspoon dried thyme
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon pepper
  • 1cup beef broth
  • 1cup dry breadcrumbs
  • egg, beaten

For crust:

  1. Combine flour, curry powder and salt.
  2. Cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in water until mixture forms a ball. Note: do not over stir.
  4. Shape dough into a log, and cut into 10 equal sections.
  5. Roll each section into a six-inch circle.
  6. Set aside.

For filling:

  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Saute onion until soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in ground beef.
  4. Season with curry powder, thyme, salt and pepper.
  5. Cook until beef is browned.
  6. Stir in beef broth and bread crumbs.
  7. Simmer until liquid is absorbed.
  8. Remove from heat and let cool.

For patties:

  1. Spoon some filling into each pastry circle.
  2. Fold over and press edges together, making a half circle.
  3. Use a fork to press edges, and brush the top of each patty with beaten egg.
  4. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Remove, let cool and enjoy!
