Unlimited food & beverages.
Sounds like the dream to your man, but for those of us who’ve been spending months to become “bikini-ready” to then have it thrown to the wind with a week-long, all-you-can-eat-and-drink-vacay, it could be a deciding factor in your beach getaway planning.
However, let us tip the scales for you. It’s still possible to savor exotic, scrumptious, mouthwatering food and drink without compromising your health or fitness goals.
Yes, it’s mind blowing.
We’ve provided tips from our very own BeachMasters who have “mastered” the art of clean eating while in an indulgent atmosphere.
Tips to tip that scale: Healthy Eating
- It starts with you-
From the beginning of your trip to the end. Establish good eating habits before you go and commit to healthy eating choices throughout your whole trip (from departure flight to returning flight), it’s all about the little decisions.
- Don’t get “Hangry” –
Hangry (adj.) a state of being one gets when so hungry that they become not only ravenous but angry as well. The ‘hangry” person is also prone to overeating to get out of their hangry state. To avoid falling victim to this adjective, snack on food high in protein with low and natural sugar (like fruit and nuts) to avoid the sugar crash that leads to hangryville. This applies from your flight to your destination as well. Pack snacks from home to avoid sugary (not to mention, pricey) snacks one can purchase in the airport.
- Eat fresh.
When you have the choice, the closer things are to nature, the better they are for you. Don’t fret; you won’t be foraging for healthy food—there will be options. For example, resorts like Secrets Capri in Riviera Maya, have health-conscious meal options including gluten free, sugar-free, vegetarian, and organic selections. And hotels get it, they know people look for healthy options on their menu so look for little symbols on menus.
Zoetry Agua Punta Cana also offers its guests a vacation focused on wellness and serves an array of organic food and beverage selections that are chosen to meet all dietary needs and include locally-grown ingredients.
- Drink water, water, & more water.
Limit the amount of mixed drinks. Those unlimited beverages are just a flag in the sand away & loaded with sugar and calories. Limit even the “zero” calorie/diet beverages. Water is best, it’ll get you through those long days soaking in the sun & adventuring on your excursion.
- “Moderation’ Perimeters in the face of temptation.
There will be indulgent main courses and desserts offered to you. If you are a person that has a difficult time saying “no” to temptation, make guidelines and perimeters.
For example: choose one meal a day to splurge. Or make a goal that motivates you to move, “I will only have x serving(s) of dessert today IF I am physically active for x amount of time.” Which brings us to…
- Grab a map to look for resort amenities.
Most resorts have gyms. When you get to the resort, get a map and locate it ASAP. Then make a plan on when to use it! Also ask for a list of activities that your resort facilitates. You may find yoga, water aerobics or another group exercise class offered. Aventura Spa Palace at Hard Rock Riviera Maya, has a state-of-the-art fitness center, 14 obstacle fitness trail, 100 ft. climbing wall, spinning, yoga, aerobics, meditation garden, lap pool, indoor sound pool, cross current exercise pool, water sports, tennis, basketball and golf. Go play!
- Do a workout in your hotel room.
There’s plenty of creative exercise routines you can do in a hotel room, patio or even the beach—no equipment required. Use a high counter as a barre, do lunges around the room, or do 10 push ups before every shower.
- Use nature as your gym.
Maximize your time in an exotic location by taking a walk, jog, hike or run along the beach.
If you get off track from your health goals, tomorrow is a new day! According to health professionals, including WebMD, stress releases adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones make your body hold on to unwanted fat. Cortisol has been linked with the buildup of abdominal fat and also interferes with your metabolic processes. Moral of the story—don’t stress!
